It’s called beauty sleep for a reason. Getting enough sleep on a regular basis is one of the best things you can do for your health. Lack of sleep affects your mental and physical health and can take a toll on your looks too.
It’s not always possible to get the amount of sleep we need, which can make us look run down and tired. Whether you’ve been working, studying or partying here are some tips on looking your best when you’re not feeling it.
Hydrate – from the inside
Water is magical when it comes to our looks and health. Staying well hydrated will flush toxins from your body (helping with those dark circles) and provide moisture to your skin, making it look fresher and more even.
So if you’re thinking, how can I improve my look when I’m so tired, then start with drinking a lot of water.
Hydrate – from the outside
Splashing your face with ice water is also a good trick for faking a wide awake complexion. Either add some ice to some water in your sink or run the water as cold as you can get it, then splash your face a few times. Not only will the shock of the cold water wake you up a bit, but it will work on your skin to shrink capillaries and tighten pores.
Dark circles – hit the cutlery draw
The eyes are one of the biggest indicators of a lack of sleep. While in an ideal world, you’d be reclining on a chaise lounge with some cucumbers over your eyes, you probably don’t have the time, or the cucumbers. A good trick is to pop some spoons in the freezer for a few minutes. Once they’re cold press them against your eyes and under eyes for an instanc de-puffing effect.
Curl your eyelashes
Whether or not you wear mascara, curling your eyelashes is the best way to open up your eyes and make you look more alert.
Invest in a good eye cream
That’s right, it’s the eyes again. They are the biggest giveaway that you aren’t getting enough sleep. A good eye cream is a must. Choose one that is hydrating and has caffeine in it. The caffeine in the eye cream will increase the circulation and break up the toxins which collect under the skins surface, which look like dark circles from the outside.
Maintain a good cleansing and moisturising regime
Regularly taking care of your skin will make it much more resilient to all those late nights or early morning’s. A good cleansing and moisturising routine will keep skin even and well hydrated and a perfect base for makeup.
Use a CC cream
Colour correcting (cc) creams are miracle workers. They combine moisturising skincare with pigments to give you a beautiful even, healthy glow. There are many available on the market, so it really is worth testing a few out to find the right one.
Remember – less is more
So your skin is looking a bit tired and dehydrated, maybe it’s uneven or breaking out. Your first instinct may be to cover it in make-up and paint a healthy glow on. While some products will definitely help you even out your skin tone and give it a fresh look, going heavy on the products will make you look worse. Tired skin is usually not the best base for heavy make up and too much will only highlight the any lines and dryness.
Fake just washed hair
If you’re short on time, you probably won’t have had the chance to give your hair some tlc. If your hair is looking lank and flat, there is a quick fix to freshen up to your hair. First, dry shampoo, a girl’s best friend. Spray the shampoo into your roots then, tip your head upside down and vigorously rub scalp with your fingers. This will work the dry shampoo into the roots and get the blood flowing to your scalp. Brush your hair upside down too and get some extra volume into your hair.
Get some fresh air
Wake yourself up by getting outside for some much needed fresh air. Not only will feel better, but taking a walk and some deep breaths will help you to look better too.
