The world today is under the heavy influence of fashion trends, however, have you ever wondered what influences fashion itself?
From goddess Sita to Kim Kardashian we can all see the culture of fashion traveling parallel to human civilization. We have all heard our grandparents commenting about our fashion sense and have also heard them say that “ we used to wear this too”. Well, this is because fashion gets influenced by its own past-trends. There has always been a set pattern that fashion tends to follow, trends repeat themselves but by adding something of the current time. For example – Girls started to wear knot- tops again but with only colors that are trending now.
In the present time, there are three major trends that have taken a u-turn and have come back to life again. Let’s see what they are –
Bell-Bottom Jeans
Who knew that bell-bottom jeans would return after such a long time? Bell bottoms were described as a part of the sailors’ uniform in 1831, later it became popular around the 1970s. The fashion of bell-bottom jeans faded away and then retrieved in the early 1990s. And here we are again, proving that fashion repeats itself!
Leather Skirts
Leather skirts can be called fresh as a daisy in the fashion industry. It is said that it is the oldest garment in the history of fashion, isn’t that interesting? Leather skirts made it’s way back before in the 1980s and yet again we see people wearing them to parties/ celebrations. Any fashion stylist you come across will never tell you to discard your leather skirt, it is just like a treasure. Leather skirts have something special, something that never gets out of fashion!
Bell Sleeves
This might come as a shock to you. Bell sleeves were a part of a garment called chasuble, a uniform of clergymen in medieval times. This fashion trend traveled from France to England, and further to the rest of the world. Bell- sleeves took a hit in the 1960s and 1970s, revived its breath for a minute in the 2000s, and has made it back to life again. The concept of the bell- sleeves are predicted to vanish again for a brief tenure of time, but it will again be seen in a few years.
Pleated Skirts
Weird as it sounds, pleated skirts were originally worn by men for ceremonies and military occasions. Well- well, who knew women would steal menswear?
The fashion of women wearing pleated skirts started in the early 20th century, this skirt was initially called Delphos. Nowadays, the pleated skirt style has retired and is being sold vigorously by designers. The best option today would be to take out the old opens and pair it with a fancy top!
The culture of fashion varies from time to time, but never completely vanishes. Currently, the trends of fashion have taken a toll by using past designs with poppy colors. Therefore, it is said that fashion makes its way to the present times. I suggest you never ever let go of your clothes just because they have become old. Discard them if they have been damaged or faded, never if they have turned out of fashion because fashion always revives itself.
Pro tip –
Ask your mother or grandmother for their old clothes, there might be a possibility you could re-use them by pairing them with your clothes. Try it out and let me know about the results!
