Sunscreens should be essential part of everyone’s skin care routine. I do not like too much layering on my face so I try to find out moisturizing sunscreens or moisturizers with SPF in it. Lotus SPF 50 sunblock is my favorite but I do not get it here in Amsterdam. I have been exploring The Body shop’s skincare so I bought The Body Shop Skin Defence Multi-Protection Essence in 50% sale last winter. I have finished using it today and realized I am yet to share my review here. So let’s read on to know if this made it to my favorites or not.

Ingredients:
My Experience with The Body Shop Skin Defence Multi-Protection Essence:
When i started using this, it gave a bit tangling sensation to my skin. It did not irritate my skin but my sensitive skin took a bit time to get accustomed to it.
Packaging:
The Body Shop Skin Defence Multi-Protection Essence comes in a white tube with matte black screw open cap. Product gets collected around nozzle and inside cap which is a pet-peeve for me. I prefer flip open tubes as they are bit less messy. Product name is written with black on rose gold background. The outer carton is also white with product information, ingredients etc mentioned in black. Packaging is super light and easy to travel with.
Texture & Consistency:
The Body Shop Skin Defence Multi-Protection Essence has testure and consistency like essence as the name suggests. Which means it is not cream or gel like but rather a thin lotion like. the formula is weightless and feather like on skin.
Performance:
Stark white color looks scary but it spreads easily and does not leave a white or grey cast behind but it does leave luminosity behind. Although it does not feel heavy on skin but Skin looks a bit shiny even after this is fully absorbed into skin which i do not like at all. I wait about 5 mins for the shine to settle a bit and then I go with makeup over it. Makeup goes on smoothly over it.
In summers, oily zones of my combination skin starts to get oily after 3-4 hours and then i can see it breaking down my foundation/bb/cc cream. And in winters it is not moisturizing enough on it’s on so you need to go with separate moisturizer underneath which again is not what i like.
I also felt the sun-protection factor is good enough but nothing extra ordinary. I do get tanned when in sum all day even after this on my skin. Also reapplying this over makeup is also not a good sight as it breaks down foundation/cc/bb cream underneath. Also on its own it gives a dull feeling to my face which is quite opposite of anti-dullness claim.
Final Verdict: 3/5
The Body Shop Skin Defence Multi-Protection Essence provides good sun protection with feather light formula and no white cast but there are many factors which i do not like about this. It has perfume and alcohol quite up high in ingredient list and it did cause tangling sensation to my sensitive skin in starting. The packaging is bit messy(in my opinion). I do not find the shininess it leaves behind flattering. It is not cheap even if you buy it in sale. Even though this tube lasted 6 months as you need very small amount for face and neck, for the price point I find it pretty average. Also term “essense” in name is kind of misleading.
Not a repurchase for me. If you really want to try it, i suggest you to get a sample from TBS store first. and sensitive skin people should do a patch test.

oh tingling sensation in an essence is a big no for me!
yes for me as well.. i also hate the teary eye effect from most of the sun protection creams…
I don’t like high perfume content of TBS products so I stay away from them. You can check Innisfree UV Protection SPF 35 PA++ mild it doesn’t leave a white cast too
most of the sunscreens give me teary eyes as well from alcohol fumes.. i love lotus ones.. i will definitely try innisfree next…
You are right dear…TBS is all about synthetic fragrance which is a big no in any cosmetic…
i’m ok with synthetic fragrance in bath and body products but not in facial skincare…specially alcohol and perfum freaks out my skin many times…
