How to pick the perfect lipstick for your next big party

The perfect lipstick can turn an average outfit into a showstopper. It can turn a dull day into a much more manageable one. Basically, the perfect lipstick is a miracle in a tube. Finding the perfect lipstick for an event can be a bit of a challenge though and it always seems easier to pull out the worn-out lipstick at the bottom of your bag (your OG everyday lipstick). Carry on reading to find out the questions you need to be asking yourself the next time you are searching for the perfect lipstick for a big party or event.

1. What kind of party is it?

Obviously, if you are attending a Halloween or fancy-dress party, then the makeup requirements are going to be pretty different from your average family get together! Colourful, bold and crazy is where it’s at! If you’re heading to a New Year’s Eve bash, then some glittery lip gloss is a must! If you are attending your own (or someone else’s) after work promotion party, then it’s probably best to stick to the nude tones or you can sport a bold lip if your rest of the makeup is subtle.

2. Does it go with your outfit?

This is normally the first question you will consider when choosing a lipstick and with good reason! There are few fashion problems worse than when you see yourself in a mirror and realise that your lipstick looks absolutely awful. Fluorescent pink with a bright yellow summer dress? Maybe not the best look if you are going for a cohesive and put together style!

3. Does it clash with your outfit?

Are you wearing a red dress? Think that your best choice is a bold red lip? Think again! Sometimes matching your outfit and makeup is not the best option. Being overly matchy-matchy can be a bit much. Just like matching your shoes, handbag and belt are considered a big fashion faux pas – always matching your lipstick with the colour of your outfit can make you seem a bit buttoned-up and dull. So why not try a ‘clashing’ colour to loosen up your overall look and help you come across a bit more down to earth? Now that red lip with LBD sounds amazing right!

4. Is it cruelty-free?

When perusing lipsticks online, it is easy to become lost in the plethora of colours and finishes on offer and forget about the wider ethical implications of our purchases. Unfortunately, 10 million animals suffer and die as a result of cosmetic testing every year, so it is important to try and support companies that promote cruelty-free products.

5. Does it make you feel good?

This is the most important point to consider. The perfect lipstick is one that makes you feel confident, so whichever lipstick makes you feel good and boosts your self-esteem is probably the one you should go for. It doesn’t really matter if the chosen lipstick clashes with your outfit or doesn’t completely adhere to usual beauty guidelines, as long as it makes you feel happy and confident whilst wearing it. So, go with your gut and follow your heart to the lipstick of your dreams!
