I have been planning to convert my terrace into garden and have been doing some research on doing so. There are so many things to it and so many questions you need to figure out like you have to plan what do you want, do you want grass bed on your terrace, do you want seating arrangement, do you want only floral plants or you want only decorative plants? See told you, not so easy-peasy. So based on my personal experience I would share few tips on how you can figure out and plan your terrace garden effectively.

1. Know the Space:

First of all you need to be familiar with the space(terrace/big balcony) you are planning to convert into the garden and you need to consider these points:

  • Is your terrace/balcony architecturally designed to support terrace garden?
  • Is your terrace waterproof? If you are planning for grass bed then make sure you do waterproofing one more time just to be sure.
  • Is there proper sunlight? Plants need sunlight to grow and flowers bloom better if they get sunlight.
  • Is water availability is easy and nearby? Obviously you don’t want to fill buckets and run in your house to water your plants.

2. Finalize the theme:

This is also very important point. You must be clear in your head about the theme you want for your garden. If you have no clue about it then there are sites like homify from where you can take inspirations or follow few interior designer ideas 🙂 Here are few inspirations 🙂

3. Pick plants based on your theme:

Once you decide on theme, select plants matching to your theme. Like if you are looking for a tea-party kind of garden then choose floral plants or floral climbers as they give better surrounding and dreamy look.

4. Choose seating arrangement/free space:

This again is your personal choice. If you want a terrace garden where you can do your morning yoga or exercise with a feeling of garden and fresh air then I would suggest you skip furniture or use movable/foldable furniture. If you notice that hanging egg chair outdoor on your neighbor’s porch, you can also get one like that for your garden. If you want an arrangement where you can read your morning newspaper and enjoy morning/evening tea then add a vintage looking iron tea table and chairs like this:

or classic recliner wooden chairs or side tables if you like to slouch and read books or a metal swing if you are fond of it. So it comes naturally if your theme is in order with your hobbies and liking.

5. Choose lighting and decorative pieces:

You can add beautiful lighting and decorative pieces that go with your theme. Like for a romantic/tea-party setup iron frames can be used that will look beautiful as well as provide base for your climber plants. You can add some romantic dim lighting too.

For a book lover kind of setup you can add stylish side lamps that go with your theme.

These are few things which really help you in the process and help you in making your work easier and more organized. Once you are through these steps, all you need is arrange and get your plan laid in reality 🙂
